Waking up on the floor Back from the war There’s no one living in your house, it’s you and you alone You don’t sleep at night And your neck you feel fear bite Then when you finally lay in bed, you can’t escape the grinding in your bones Every chair you’ve sat in is covered in broken glass And the pain is coming round again to knock you on your ass Shoot that balloon out of the sky and answer to the why You have to wait another day until you can keep your thoughts at bay You paint the canvas of your life while no one stings you cold as ice You have to wait another day until you can wipe away the grey And now you’re spinning again Every word awakens them But are they even there at all and are you even real Still nobody sees Your paranoia they only feed They tell you you’re just using them and you must be punished for the way you feel Even on your good days they still don’t understand They’ll use your hurt to try and make everything about them Shoot that balloon out of the sky and answer to the why You have to wait another day until you can keep your thoughts at bay You paint the canvas of your life while no one stings you cold as ice You have to wait another day until you can wipe away the grey Working on a dream was all you ever had to do But when you tried they’d turn the blame towards you Next thing you know they locked you up, didn’t try to understand And when you reached out for their help they cut off both of your hands Shoot that balloon out of the sky and answer to the why You have to wait another day until you can keep your thoughts at bay You paint the canvas of your life while no one stings you cold as ice You have to wait another day but will they even let you stay?

Brachiosaurus awakes. He begins to take a walk. He stops every now and then to groan and roar. He takes a break from his walk to munch on some leaves. He resumes his walk. Suddenly the ground beneath him feels weak. It crumbles, he falls.

about

At long last I’ve returned with “Balloon”, my first single in nearly two years. “Balloon” is a collaboration with the incredible band Wardrobe Malfunction from Atlanta, and they’ve done a fantastic job helping me bring the musical world I created in my head into reality. The song is a musical throwback to the 60s and 70s, wearing its Nick Lowe and Byrds influences firmly on its sleeve for all to see, before taking a surprise turn at the end. The lyrics are the complete opposite of the bright and happy music, however. This song had quite a troubled production cycle, facing many difficulties in recording from the time I first wrote it in mid 2021, to its completion in February 2024. But at last it’s here, and is every bit as wonderful as I’d dreamed it would be!

The b-side, “Brachiosaurus”, could barely be called music, but I still think it sounds pretty cool. It’s a nine-minute piece of sound art along the lines of “Fly” by Yoko Ono, and while some may say it isn’t something that should have ever been released… I say screw those people! I’ll release what I want.

The single’s cover art (both the front and the back) was designed by Isabella Roman (@mindthedroves on Instagram), one of the most unique artists I’ve ever had the pleasure of crossing paths with. She did an absolutely amazing job creating unique artwork that perfectly illustrates what each of the songs on this single is all about. Can’t wait to work with her more in the future!

Stay tuned for “Part 2” of this single coming out on February 28th, which will feature an acoustic version of “Balloon” alongside a new original song as the b-side.
Also, if you’re for some reason somebody that’s interested in CD singles, you can purchase a CD version of this single here on my Bandcamp!
