Harriet woke up and crawled out of bed Thinking too much of what she never said So she picks up and shoots up her syringe Then she left for work at a quarter to three Thinking “how lovely and sinful of me” But once she got there she did nothing at all But at the end of the day She has a way to wash her troubles away So she grabs a knife and stares at the wall Watching the shadows as they stand so tall So Harriet grabs them and rips them apart Doing it for a form of twisted art Then she presses her face up against the wall Hoping that they respond to her call Now she’s got friends of all different kinds And all of them swim through the colors of her mind But now she’s with them and she’s in a better place Harriet feels their comfort surround her Yet everywhere she goes people say she’s a downer So she grabs a syringe and then starts to shoot up again Harriet knows her family worries Yet every single day she desperately hurries To get back home from work and stare at the wall She knows who her true friends are Even though they give her scars Later on she found herself all grown up and happy Or at least that’s what I had been told, it’s been years since her I’ve seen I heard she has a husband now or perhaps it was a wife But either way I’m sure she lives a very happy life But oh how quickly they revealed themselves as lies How quickly they removed the very happy disguise She was still the same old girl that I had come to know And still after all of these years, her friends refused to show But she still always talks to them each day inside her head And so she will continue to even on her deathbed So Harriet closes and locks her door And she picks a strange item up off the floor Then she looks at her wall and she starts the cycle again

about

My latest single.

“Harriet Swings It” is a song that’s pretty lengthy, and is possibly my most ambitious song yet. It's a mini rock opera that musically pulls from jazz, rockabilly, and my typical piano rock, with a multipart structure that’s quite a departure from some of my previous stuff. Lyrically it tells the story of a girl named Harriet and her struggles with addiction, escapism, paranoia and most importantly: friendship! The song is fleshed out with full instrumentation and production, quite a step above my usual barebones piano and vocal approach.
The b-side is a cover of "I Think I'll Disappear Now" by Crash Test Dummies, a song I absolutely love and have wanted to cover for awhile now. It was recorded live in the studio with the only overdub being a guitar solo, so it's quite a contrast from the fuller sound of the a-side.

The gorgeous artwork for the song was done by the artist @teyoid, who did a wonderful job capturing the feeling of the song.

It should also be noted that while this is a standalone single, "Harriet Swings It" will also be included on an upcoming compilation for Robo Jack Records.
